The Ecuadorian Amazon
The Amazon rainforest is the largest rainforest area on earth, covering large portions of eight South American countries including Ecuador. Ecuador, although a small country, is considered to be the eighth most biodiverse country on earth, with almost 20,000 species of plants, about 1500 species of birds, 840 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 340 species of mammals. Many of these species call the Amazon region home, with over 500 species of birds found in certain areas and as many as 400 species of plants in a single hectare. The Amazon rainforest is also essential to humans, providing about 20% of the earth's oxygen and containing over two-thirds of the world's fresh water in its rivers and lakes.
The Ecuadorian Amazon is relatively accessible, allowing tourists to experience the amazing beauty and tranquility of the region and to see a variety of unique plant and animal species. A visit to this region should not be missed; it is an experience no one will ever be able to forget.
Eos Ecuador offers lodges and tours in the Amazon that we feel offer a great experience for the tourist while operating under sound ecological principles and helping to benefit the local communities that also call the Amazon region home. The Amazon region is threatened by oil exploration and extraction and clearing for agriculture; we believe tourism offers an alternative way for the people to earn an income without destroying the resources that sustain them (and the rest of the planet). We encourage you to explore this section of our site, and book your tour with us knowing that our profits will help promote sustainable development in Ecuador.
